Beginning Your Web Marketing Routine

posted Sep 19, 2011 8:15 AM by Christian Bryant   [ updated Sep 20, 2011 8:55 AM ]

Internet marketing yields results based on the amount of time spent on it. Like other tasks that entrepreneurs must do, it requires discipline and planning to reach the desired goal -- more traffic, more exposure for the website, and more prospective customers. This goal must be approached with different methods but giving thorough and quality work to each site update, article, blog, or social media post. Business owners can minimize stress and organize tasks according to their importance, starting a web marketing routine best for them.

Business owners have to realize that it will take time to regularly update content for websites, publish content on Facebook and Twitter, and other websites that propel your web marketing efforts. So where do you begin?
  1. Organize sites and bookmarks in a folder so that you can easily access sites. Put sites in folders based on frequency, whether its a forum or blog, article, or however it is best organized for you. Ease for your daily routine is the goal.
  2. Using Microsoft Excel or Google Documents Spreadsheets, you can begin to record important log-in information as well. Security is important so I do not advise that the information is stored online, or on Google Docs. But with the growing popularity of social networking sites, it is difficult to decide which ones are most beneficial until you've researched, tried, and tested them.
  3. Create folders in your email account for sites, messages, log-in information, confirmation codes for software purchased, and any other information that should be grouped and easily accessible. Make specific folders so that you don't waste time even looking through folders. You could label them as:
    • Marketing Newsletters
    • Facebook Groups and Twitter Direct Messages
    • Forums
    • Need Followup
    • Log-in and confirmation codes
  4. Begin to think about when you can honestly spend time online. Are you going to spend time in the evenings, throughout the day, mornings, just weekends? Be sure to consider your own schedule as well as when might be best for the target audiences you want to market to. This will also help to identify certain sites tasks you are doing that are not yielding any results and are becoming a waste of time. But before you pull the plug, make sure you have given it adequate time to produce some results. Two weeks for article marketing is not enough time, but may be ample to decide whether your profile on a social networking site needs improvement or should be taken down altogether.
  5. Set priorities and do not start all at once. Unless you plan to outsource your web marketing tasks, it can be overwhelming, and a lot of time spent. It is even more difficult to justify continuing the routine if results are not evident as quickly as you would hope. It is best to focus on one or two areas of your web marketing strategy so that you can master them and begin to see success. Putting time into two tasks, and doing them well, is better than splitting it between five and not doing them well.
Next, we will discuss how you can create a schedule that is realistic and beneficial for you as well. The times and days are up to you, but here are some tips when making your schedule:
  • The more articles, the more links you have back to your blog or website. Setting aside time to write articles will be crucial. You will need to do long and short keyword research, look into Google Insights for specific regions or categories for searches, and look for credible resources to back up anything you say that is not widely known.
  • Bloggers often suggest blogging 2-3 times per week to give updated and fresh content for search engine spiders. You may know more about what you want to discuss on your blog, but time should still be spent looking for the best way to word your posts to increase website traffic.
  • Social Media should be done daily, in my opinion. It is not difficult to spend some time in the day dedicated to engaging with your followers and fans, posting links to helpful articles, contests, or news. This step helps bring visitors to your blogs and articles a long with good search engine optimization.
It is important to remember to write to people, in the clearest way possible. Communicate your message in the way they understand and will be most likely to react. Grab their attention from the beginning, and spark their interest so they want to read on.
